The two Tayside sides have Scottish League Cup Group C sewn up, Dundee United sitting top of the pile on nine points with Dundee FC behind only on goal difference. Also-rans Raith Rovers and Cowdenbeath are on three points apiece and they will just want their involvement in the competition to draw to a close and look forward to their league campaign in less than two weeks' time.
This is to all intents a meaningless affair with little to play for except pride. Both sides have faired miserably in the group, little wonder really given that the Dundee teams were always expected to dominate from the outset. For their part, Raith Rovers opened their campaign with back-to-back defeats to Dundee United (2-0) and Dundee FC (2-1) while their latest outing ended in a comprehensive 6-1 win away at Buckie Thistle.
Cowdenbeath also enjoyed a win over the Highland League side in match-day one, however this was followed by defeats to the two Dundee clubs. Indeed with nothing at stake, we expect a dreary affair with few goals and few supporters. The home side will clearly have the edge, however the upcoming league campaign will be on the minds of both managers and a low-score bore draw is perhaps the best that we can hope for in Kirkcaldy on Saturday afternoon. Nothing to get too excited about then.
