AS Monaco were hammered 4-0 at Nice in their last outing on Friday evening but they will be confident of bouncing back from this disappointment when they face Bundesliga side RB Leipzig in the latter’s first ever European game. Leipzig have enjoyed a spectacular rise through the German divisions with their first ever top-flight campaign ending with the side finishing runners-up to eventual winners Bayern Munich. Their reward has been a direct entry into the group stages of the Champions League although they will be presented with a tough task when they lock horns with Monaco this week.
Monaco impressed in last season’s competition with wins over the likes of Manchester City, Tottenham Hotspur and Borussia Dortmund on their way to the semi-finals where they were knocked out by Juventus. Since that relatively successful campaign they have lost Bernardo Silva, Tiemoue Bakayoko, Kylian Mbappe and Benjamin Mendy for an estimated £300million, however in the other direction they have been boosted by new arrivals which include Keita Balde, Stevan Jovetic, Terence Kongolo and Youri Tielemans.
The likes of Radamel Falcao, Fabinho and Thomas Lemar are still in the Monaco ranks, therefore there remains much in the way of top-level quality and there is every possibility that they will enjoy another decent run in the competition this time around.
Their 4-0 hammering by Nice will have dented confidence a little but boss Leonardo Jardim rested a few players in anticipation of this outing and Monaco had previously enjoyed some excellent wins including a 6-1 demolition of Marseille.
Leipzig have been something of a mixed bag in their Bundesliga campaign but this competition is a new experience for them and whilst the bookmakers make the hosts odds-on favourites, we don’t envisage it ending too well for the home side on Friday evening.
