Brighton’s slip up at Nottingham Forest gave Newcastle United a chance to extend their lead at the top of the Championship table and the Magpies duly obliged by beating fellow promotion-hopefuls Huddersfield Town 3-1 at the Kirklees Stadium. Rafael Benitez’ men enjoy an eleven point lead over the Terriers and whilst their automatic promotion looks all-but-assured, they certainly won’t be resting on their laurels when they travel to the Madejski Stadium on Tuesday evening.
Reading remain very much in the hunt for a play-off place despite some uninspiring results of late. They head into this match on the back of a decent 2-1 win over Wolverhampton wanderers on Saturday afternoon but this in itself came on the back of successive defeats to Huddersfield Town and Brighton & Hove Albion, therefore manager Jaap Stam will be desperate to grab a second consecutive victory on home soil on Tuesday evening.
In all honesty we don’t fancy their chances too much. The Magpies have been excellent both on the road and away from home this season and we don’t envisage their title charge stumbling when they head to the Madejski Stadium. Benitez’s men have now swept aside their main title challengers in the last two outings and we see absolutely no reason why they shouldn’t put a massive dent in Reading’s automatic promotion hopes by sealing the three points this week.
Indeed we’re somewhat surprised to see the visiting Magpies priced at a generous 11/10 to win on Tuesday. The Royals are pretty solid on home turf but this is their biggest test yet at the Madejski and we feel that backing the visitors provides the punters with the best opportunity to get their hands on some winnings.
