Reading are a bit of an enigma this season. They have returned some hugely convincing results but have suffered some inexplicable hammerings along the way. Their form over the past few weeks reflects this fact with wins over the likes of Leeds United and Sheffield Wednesday being interspersed with thorough defeats to Preston North End (3-0), Norwich City (7-1) and Championship strugglers Nottingham Forest (3-2). This makes the Royals extremely hard to back with any confidence whatsoever, however this weekend’s clash with relegation-bound Wigan Athletic should be a real no-brainer.
The Latics have been amongst the relegation contenders for much of the season and their goal-less draw with Cardiff City last weekend effectively ensured that they will make the drop to League One at the end of the season. Six Points separate Wigan from fourth-bottom side Birmingham City and with just two games left to play, it really looks like a case of game-over as far as their Championship status is concerned.
Mathematically they are still in with a very slight chance and they will be quietly confident of getting one over on an inconsistent Reading side this weekend, however we don’t share their optimism. Reading may have stumbled of late but they are in the play-off places following what has been, generally speaking an excellent campaign. Wigan have been pretty dismal to be fair and their dreadful form on the road makes backing the home side just that little bit easier. Reading cannot usually be backed with much confidence this season but Wigan are extremely unlikely to get anything from their trip to the Berkshire on Saturday afternoon, not even a consolation goal.
