Rotherham United have been very much out of their depth in this season’s Championship, a fact which became apparent in the opening weeks of the campaign. They remained rock-bottom of the Championship table throughout the season and it was no huge surprise when they eventually succumbed to the inevitable and relegation was confirmed some weeks ago.
Since the pressure has been lifted, the Millers have actually shown signs of improvement. Whilst their recent form isn’t much to write home about, they have nevertheless managed a couple of decent draws against Birmingham City and Preston North End and grabbed their fifth Championship win of the season in their last home game. Will they make it back-to-back victories for the first time this season when they welcome Derby County to the New York Stadium at lunchtime on Saturday?
We believe that they can manage something from this match but we’ll be stopping short of three points. Visitors Derby County were expected to be featuring amongst the play-off contenders this season but they fell far short following a mixed bag of recent results. They beat Wolverhampton Wanderers 3-1 in their last Championship outing but prior to this they could only secure a single point from their previous three games and whilst this weekend’s hosts Rotherham United have been nothing short of woeful this term, recent signs of improvement would suggest that they can indeed manage something from their final match of the season. Just don’t expect it to be three points.
Do expect a few goals though. Rotherham haven’t exactly been banging them in for fun this season but they have found the net in each of their last five games. Derby County have been pretty prolific on the goal-scoring front but their struggling defence has been their main cause of concern and this should result in both sides adding to the goal-tally.
