World Cup hosts Russia continue their preparations for next summer’s competition when they face Belgium tonight in what is a high profile clash. The Russians fell to a surprise 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast last week but are priced at a measly 23/10 with Bet365 to bounce back from that disappointment by running in winners in tonight’s game.
Belgium were held to a 1-1 draw in their weekend World Cup qualifier with Greece and this stalemate was their second in three outings, however we fancy their chances of brushing aside a Russian team which really do appear to be struggling at the moment.
Stanislav Cherchesov is now the man in the hot-seat following the departure of Leonid Slutsky although the new boss is finding himself under ever-increasing pressure after three defeats in Russia’s last four friendly outings. Nevertheless the former Legia Warsaw manager perhaps isn’t the man to blame for this lacklustre form, many suggesting that the limit on foreign players in the domestic league is reducing the competitive quality of home-grown talent.
In complete contrast, Belgium boss Martinez can draw on a strong squad which many consider to be a ‘golden generation’ with most players operating at the top level of European club football. Indeed with this in mind it is hard to make a case for the home side and following their defeats to the likes of Qatar, Ivory Coast and Costa Rica, it isn’t easy to see how they will cope against Belgium tonight.
With this in mind, odds of 13/10 on a Belgian victory seem too good to be true.
