Sheffield Wednesday have been amongst the play-off contenders for most of the season and their consistency looks like it might just pay off. Whilst the Owls are very much out of the running as far as automatic promotion is concerned, they look well placed to finish in the top-six in the Championship and thus secure for themselves a chance of reaching the top-flight via the play-offs.
Recent results would suggest that Carlos Carvalhal’s men will remain in play-off contention until the end of the regular season, their last few outings painting a pretty impressive picture. The Owls have dropped just two points in their last five Championship outings with wins against the likes of QPR, Cardiff City, Newcastle United and Rotherham United as well as a draw with Barnsley. Their form at Hillsborough makes for even more impressive reading with just two home defeats since early November and this all points towards a win on Saturday afternoon against Derby County.
For their part, the Rams have disappointed this season. They too were expected to be amongst the play-off contenders at the very least but their inconsistency has cost them dearly. Derby sit ten points adrift of the top-six with just a single point to show for their last two Championship outings and whilst they are having few problems in front of goal and should contribute towards the scoreline this weekend, an Owls victory looks pretty nailed-on as Carvalhal’s men further cement their place in the play-offs.
