Rotherham United's drop from the Championship was pretty straightforward with the Millers managing just five wins throughout the entire season, however they were joined by Wigan Athletic and Blackburn Rovers in the bottom three, the latter two sides now favourites to return immediately back to the second tier at the first time of asking.
Wigan wasted little time in appointing a new manager to help them make the jump back up to the Championship and with former Portsmouth boss Paul Cook at the helm, many believe that he has what it takes to help his new charges win promotion given that he lifted Pompey into League One at the end of 2016/17.
Wigan will have plenty of cash to splash before the new season begins and Cook has underlined his intentions already by snapping up Gavin Massey, the 24-year-old a free agent leaving recently-relegated Leyton Orient. Cook was impressed by Massey last season and feels that he will prove to be a very useful addition to what is already a pretty strong squad with the likes of Michael Jacobs, Max Power and Omar Bogle certain to stand out in the third tier next season.
Wigan are 8/1 to win the Championship at the end of 2017/18 although they sit second to Blackburn Rovers in the outright winner betting market, the Lancashire side 5/1 to return straight back up to the Championship as champions. Tony Mowbray is the man in charge at Ewood Park and Rovers have already demonstrated that they have money to spend with Peter Whittingham signed from Cardiff City and Rickie Lambert reportedly close to signing a deal before the transfer window slams shut.
Newly-promoted Portsmouth are next in the betting at 10/1 to win the League One title and they have a very capable man at the helm in the form of Kenny Jacket. Does he have what it takes to lift Pompey into the second tier? Perhaps he does.
One side which have been active in the transfer market is Bury, the Shakers boosting their squad with some relatively high-profile signings such as Jermaine Beckford, Phil Edwards, Stephen Dawson and Callum Reilly. The Shakers finished 19th in League One last season but with a new-look squad coming together for 2017/18, could we be seeing them challenge for top honours at the end of the campaign? At 25/1 for the title and 8/1 for promotion they're surely worth a punt!
