West Ham have had an underwhelming season to date which is partly explained by the fact that Sam Allardyce didn’t spend much money last summer, with the manager having pinned his scoring hopes on Andy Carroll before the England striker sustained a long-term injury.
Carlton Cole managed to break the deadlock against Arsenal on Thursday, although three late goals from the Gunners sealed the points and it means that the east London side have dropped into the relegation zone following wins for several of their rivals.
There still appears to be no return date with regard to Carroll, although a recent 2-1 win at White Hart Lane featured a goal from none other than Modibo Maiga and the Mali striker will be looking to gun down a West Brom side still searching for a permanent manager following the departure of Steve Clarke.
The Hammers are warm favourites at odds of 5/4 with Betfred online, although the east London side have won just two of their nine encounters at the Boleyn Ground this term, while a lowly goal return has produced cause for concern.
That man Maiga is a 7/1 chance with Paddy Power to score the first goal, although Ravel Morrison could be a better shout at twice the price with Winner, with the youngster having stood out in midfield this season and likely to produce a moment of magic.
West Brom are a 12/5 chance to claim an important win on Saturday, with Keith Downing continuing to take temporary charge of the Midlands team while chairman Jeremy Peace interviews potential candidates for the permanent vacancy.
It appears that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and Pepe Mel could be in the running for the gig, although Malky Mackay is available at single figure odds and it could be that Albion are biding their time to see what happens at Cardiff on that front.
The Baggies are without a win in their last eight games and would probably take a draw from this match ahead of home contests ahead of Newcastle and Crystal Palace, with odds of 12/5 on offer that the game ends all square.
We shouldn’t expect the net to be bulging too many times as Allardyce looks to grind a low-scoring win out of this game and the 20/23 about Under 2.5 Goals looks attractive with BetVictor, while a 1-0 success in favour of the Hammers can be backed at 15/2 with the same firm.
