Wigan Athletic look to be effectively dead and buried as far as their Championship status is concerned and with seven points now separating the Latics from safety and just five matches left to play, the writing is very much on the wall.
Indeed Wigan’s recent results leave a lot to be desired and whilst they ended a four-game losing run by beating already-relegated Rotherham United on Saturday afternoon, even a late turnaround would require a massive amount of luck as we rapidly approach the end of the season.
We don’t believe that Wigan will experience much of that luck on Thursday evening when they face Barnsley at the DW Stadium. The Tykes haven’t exactly been flying high in this season’s Championship but the South Yorkshire side nevertheless enjoy a comfortable mid-table position as things stand, courtesy of a decent run which has seen them avoid defeat in their last three outings.
Indeed Paul Heckingbottom’s men managed a decent 2-0 win at Blackburn’s Ewood Park on Saturday and there is little reason to believe that they won’t be making it two wins on the bounce when they face the Latics on Thursday. Wigan have been struggling in front of goal this season and their goals-against record in the joint second-worst in the Championship behind Rotherham and alongside Blackburn Rovers. Barnsley haven’t conceded in their last two outings and we’ll be backing them to keep a third successive clean sheet as well as clinching all three points at the DW Stadium this week.
