Marcelo Bielsa has been sacked by Leeds United, with the Argentine paying the price for a series of poor performances and results this season. Most recently, the Yorkshire side were beaten 4-2 at home to Manchester United which was followed by a 6-0 thrashing at Anfield and then a 4-0 humbling against Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road.

Leeds United chairman Andrea Radrizzani admitted this was the most difficult decision of his tenure to date, with Bielsa having been a roaring success up until recently. The 65-year-old guided the Whites to the Premier League by playing a swashbuckling style of football and it was the same ethos that kept them afloat in the top flight last term.

However, Leeds sit 16th in the table and have averaged less than a point per match this season in the Premier League, with their relegation odds having severely shortened since the turn of the year. The Yorkshire club will now look to recruit a successor in a short space of time in order to stay in the division.

Jesse Marsch Favourite to Become Leeds United Manager

It is possible that Leeds United were already planning to make a change before being comfortably beaten by Spurs, with Jesse Marsch allegedly waiting in the wings. Until recently, he was the manager of RB Leipzig, although it appears that the American will now be installed into the Elland Road hot seat if the rumours are correct.

Marsch was the assistant coach of the United States men’s national team ten years ago before taking charge of Montreal Impact and New York Red Bulls in the MLS. More recently, he managed Red Bull Salzburg and led the Austrian into the Champions League, while his time with Leipzig lasted just 21 games and the team lost more games than they won.

The 48-year-old would surely look to shore up a Leeds defence that has conceded sixty goals although he has limited experience when it comes to managing elite teams and the Premier League will be a tough assignment considering that confidence levels are so low within the squad. Marsch will also have to fare without Liam Cooper, Kalvin Phillips and Patrick Bamford for the time being.

Would Sam Allardyce Be Brought In on a Short-Term Deal?

Sam Allardyce has been there and bought the t-shirt when it comes to rescuing teams from Premier League relegation, with the former England boss having only failed to keep West Brom out of the bottom three after rescuing a string of other teams including Bolton, Sunderland and Crystal Palace.

Allardyce has never officially retired and would certainly be interested in the Leeds United manager’s position given the stature of the club, with his pragmatic style of football hardly likely to endear him to the locals although we might see a defence immediately tightened up after conceding such a glut of goals.

Benitez Might Be Open to Short-Term Contract

Rafael Benitez has recently left Everton FC and might be interested in remaining in England for his next role. The Spaniard has now enjoyed spells with Liverpool, Chelsea, Newcastle and Everton, so it wouldn’t be a huge shock if we saw him linked with the Leeds United role where he might feel as though an impact could be made.

Leeds has a huge fanbase which is not dissimilar to that of Newcastle and that was a club where Benitez had plenty of adoration, although the Yorkshire club might want a younger replacement for Bielsa considering that they are scrapping against the drop and it’s not a situation where the former Valencia boss has a stack of experience.

Would Erik ten Hag Be Interested in Switch From Ajax?

Leeds United won’t be short of potential applicants looking as this manager’s job as a glittering opportunity to be part of a huge success story. One gets the impression that Erik ten Hag has been waiting in the wings for several years at Ajax, looking to achieve as much as possible with the Amsterdam club before eventually trying his luck further afield.

Ten Hag has a seriously impressive track record with Ajax and it’s not out of the question that he could end up steering the Netherlands team to the Champions League final this season, with the club one of the standout sides during the group stage, while they are also top dogs domestically.

Having been linked to the Manchester United manager’s job, it will be interesting to see whether Leeds consider him on their shortlist and that would potentially mean more of a continuation when it comes to the Bielsa style of play.

Mourinho Could Be a Wildcard Pick at Elland Road

Nobody expected Leeds United to recruit a manager with the calibre of Marcelo Bielsa and the same might apply to Jose Mourinho. However, the Portuguese has managed several top clubs in the Premier League and might look upon the Leeds United job as a chance to enhance his reputation in England after failed stints with Manchester United and Tottenham.

Mourinho is currently in charge of Roma and he has seen them trundle along in mid-table in Serie A, with a more attacking style of football on show than with previous clubs. However, it might be something of a risk to hire a manager who clearly commands a king’s ransom in order to manage any club, especially the position in which the club find themselves.
