Mohamed Salah is the odds-on betting favourite to be PFA Player of the Year this season, with Portuguese pair Cristiano Ronaldo and Bernardo Silva next in the market.
There is plenty of speculation over which Premier League player will be crowned the most outstanding player come the end of the 2021/22 season.
We’re only a few months away from the voting slips being issued where the players in the Premier League decide which of their peers was the standout performer during the campaign. In this article, we look at the leading contenders, starting with a certain Egyptian king.
Mohamed Salah – 4/6
If the vote took place today, it’s heavily likely that Salah would win the PFA Player of the Year award. He already landed this accolade at the end of his inaugural season with Liverpool Football Club, although the forward has enjoyed even better form in the past few months, scoring a bucketload of goals for the title challengers.
Whether or not the Egyptian is able to fire the Reds to another title is a moot point in the context of this award, with his individual brilliance having been firmly acknowledged and he is well clear at the top of the Premier League scoring charts.
Salah has scored some breathtaking goals including efforts against Manchester City and Watford, with manager Jurgen Klopp declaring he is among the world’s best and the likeable former Roma winger is sure to canvas plenty of votes from other players.

Bernardo Silva – 8/1
At the time of writing, Manchester City are strong favourites to win the 2021-22 Premier League title although it’s not Kevin de Bruyne who is currently powering a team who has won three of the past four domestic championships. Instead, Bernardo Silva has stepped up in a big way and is currently the first name on the team sheet.
Silva was reported to be leaving the north-west club in the summer due to a lack of game team during the previous campaign, although the Portuguese is now making a big impact on the pitch and it’s how to see how Pep Guardiola is going to leave him out other than to get an occasional rest.

Cristiano Ronaldo – 8/1
Ronaldo arrived at Old Trafford to an enormous fanfare and promptly scored two goals against Newcastle United, thus prompting the bookies to cut his betting odds when it came to the Player of the Year award.
The 36-year-old is no stranger to being decorated with individual plaudits and it could be that the former Real Madrid forward is on the shortlist this term.
Ralf Rangnick has recently taken charge of the Red Devils and wants to continue building an attack around a player who recently bagged another brace against Arsenal, while the brand known as CR7 also scored in five consecutive Champions League clashes for United to help them into the knockout stage and beyond.

Kevin de Bruyne – 20/1
De Bruyne has been in the Premier League Team of the Year on three separate occasions and the Belgian certainly has the potential to challenge for this award, despite a minimal impact for Manchester City so far this season.
The midfielder has had his usual injury problems along with getting COVID-19, although he now looks set to help his team during the festive fixtures.
Indeed, it should be noted that he’s been a consecutive winner of this award in the past two campaigns and the recency bias with this award means that he could yet put himself into contention for a hat-trick, especially if he starts creating and scoring important match-winning goals that propel the Citizens to another title.

Phil Foden – 25/1
Foden is odds-on to win the PFA Young Player of the Year award and he might well be on the shortlist for the main trophy. The left-sided forward has shone brightly during the current campaign, adding goals to his repertoire and he’s also firmly involved in the England set-up.
There were concerns that Foden might get outshone by international team-mate Jack Grealish this season although those fears haven’t transpired and it’s clear that Guardiola trusts him to perform an important role when it comes to the biggest games of the season.

Virgil van Dijk – 33/1
Van Dijk’s importance to the Liverpool team cannot be underestimated. The Dutchman was a long-term absentee last season where the Reds often looked unlikely to qualify for the Champions League, although the central defender is now back at the helm and the Merseyside outfit look more like their title-winning selves.
While it’s uncommon for defenders to win these individual awards, it is clear that Van Dijk is one of the world’s best when it comes to his position, with the player capable of starting attacks along with dealing with the Premier League’s most dangerous forwards.
