One of the most dramatic transfers of this summer’s transfer window, and perhaps any previous transfer window, was Cristiano Ronaldo’s return to the Premier League and Manchester United. The Old Trafford side announced the signing hours after their neighbours and reigning champions City were favourites to land the 36-year-old.

Ronaldo is regarded as one of the best players ever to play the game, but the player is approaching the twilight of his career. The Portuguese star has signed a two-year contract with the option of a third and the way in which Ronaldo looks after his body, United will hope their returning hero will continue the sparkling form he has shown ever since making his first United debut in 2003.

So what will Ronaldo achieve at Old Trafford this season? United will hope his capture can help them close the gap on City and make them title contenders again. The gap between United who finished second and City was 12 points. We take a look at some of the markets available with some of the leading betting sites.

Will The Goals Flow For Returning Hero?

Ronaldo’s first spell at United was an overwhelming success. United fans expect their team to play with a certain degree of flair and Ronaldo certainly brought that to Old Trafford. Wearing the iconic number seven shirt, Ronaldo lit up the Premier League scoring 17, 31 and 18 goals in his last three seasons before joining Real Madrid for £80m in the summer of 2009.

Ronaldo, whose two goals for Portugal against the Republic of Ireland made him the all-time leading scorer in international football, could make his second debut at Old Trafford against Newcastle who he has faced 10 times in the Premier League and scored five goals.

Fellow Portuguese, Bruno Fernandes, was United’s leading scorer last season with 18, nine of which came from the penalty spot. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has to decide who will be on penalty duty for the Red Devils. If Ronaldo gets the nod, then he could will be amongst the leading scorers this season with the best betting sites.

Ronaldo is 8/13 with William Hill to be United’s leading scorer in the Premier League although he is already three goals behind his fellow countryman, who scored a hat-trick in United’s 5-1 opening day win over Leeds.

Last season, Harry Kane won his third Golden Boot award scoring 23 goals for Tottenham. Ronaldo is 13/8 with Paddy Power to score one more league goal than the Spurs and England striker this season.

Ronaldo is also 5/1 with Unibet to mark his return to the Premier League by beating the league’s leading scorer. He faces stiff competition from Kane, last season’s runner-up Mohamed Salah and Chelsea’s Romelu Lukaku.

During his first spell at United in the Premier League, Ronaldo registered 34 assists in his 196 games played. His deliveries from free kicks will be important to his club this season and Ronaldo is 11/8 with William Hill to register more than seven assists this season.

Can Ronaldo Continue to Collect Individual Awards?

During his first spell in the Premier League, Ronaldo was voted PFA Player of the Year in back-to-back seasons becoming the first player to do so since Thierry Henry in 2004. Last season, Kevin de Bruyne became the first player since Ronaldo in 2008 to land the award in successive seasons.

Ronaldo will become the oldest winner of the prestigious individual award if he can light up the league again. Teddy Sheringham remains the oldest player to win the accolade when aged 35, the Manchester United forward was voted the best player in the league by his peers.

Despite being 36, Ronaldo remains one of the fittest players playing the game. He looks after his body and he has managed to avoid serious injuries that would have kept him out of action for long spells.

If Ronaldo can keep fit, there is nothing to suggest he can’t feature in the majority of games for United. Last season, Ronaldo featured in 58 matches for Juventus and Portugal and United will hope for a similar return this season.

Ronaldo is 6/1 with Betfair to win his third PFA Player of the Year award, 14 years after picking up his last one. City’s midfielder Kevin de Bruyne will be looking to win the award for the third successive season and the Belgian will be near the top of the market with most of the trusted betting sites

De Bruyne has yet to win the Ballon d’Or, which has been dominated by Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. Messi leads his great rival with six wins but the Portuguese can draw level if he manages to win it this season.

Both players are starting new chapters in their illustrious careers with Messi joining Paris St-Germain after 16 seasons at Barcelona. Ronaldo, who is the last Premier League player to win the award when winning his first in 2008, is 10/1 with William Hill to win the Ballon d’Or for a sixth time this season.
