What Will Tottenham Do This Season?

Santo’s last game in charge was Saturday’s 3-0 home defeat to Manchester United which left Spurs ninth in the Premier League table. When Tottenham reached the Champions League final in June 2019, it was supposed to herald a new beginning for the north London club. However, Mauricio Pochettino’s side were beat 2-0 by Liverpool and things went downhill from there.

Pochettino didn’t last much longer in the job and was replaced by Jose Mourinho four and a half months after the Champions League final. The ‘Special One’ failed to last 18 months and his departure saw Ryan Mason take control of the team for the remainder of the season.

A frantic search in the summer saw Spurs linked with a host of managers who turned the job down. Nuno Espirito Santo was down the list of candidates and was eventually offered the job at a time when his position as Wolves manager was becoming unstable.

The Portuguese did a good job at Wolves in his first couple of season, taking them from the Championship to back-to-back seventh place finishes in the Premier League. A drop to 13th last season signaled the end for Santo. Conte will hope he can start his tenure with a win in Thursday night’s Europa Conference League tie at home to Vitesse Arnhem.

Get Kane Firing On All Cylinders

One goal in nine league games is a run you simply don’t associate with Harry Kane, who won his third Golden Boot award last season. Kane has looked unsettled after making it clear in the summer that he would be willing to leave the club. But a transfer to Manchester City never materialised and the England skipper stayed put.

It seemed unthinkable that the Spurs fans would turn on him, but they did with boos ringing around the stadium during the 3-0 defeat at home to Manchester United that ultimately cost Santo his job.

Conte has to figure out a way to get Kane back to his best. At times against United, the striker was wide right and wide left when he should be the central figure in Tottenham’s attack and might explain why his goal return is as low as it is.

Kane is already nine goals behind Mohamed Salah in the race for this season’s Golden Boot. But Kane’s immediate aim is to rediscover his scoring which will help win back the fans who booed him last weekend. Kane is 22/1 with SpreadEx to win a fourth Golden Boot award which might be worth looking at if you have a free bet to use.

Top Half Finish Well Within Spurs’ Grasp

Usually when a manager loses his job, the club are in a relegation battle. That was the case with Newcastle who sacked Steve Bruce recently. However, that is not the case with Tottenham who start life under Conte ninth in the table.

Conte’s opening fixtures are very favourable with six of their next seven games coming against teams currently below them in the standings. It’s a run of games where Spurs will be expected to pick up points to help them climb the table.

If Conte can stay unbeaten by the time they host Liverpool on December 19, they should find themselves in a much healthier state. Winning the league at 500/1 with many of the leading betting sites looks beyond them, but a top four finish is achievable with just five points separating Spurs and West Ham.

MansionBet are offering odds of 35/4 for a top four finish while a top six finish is available at 7/4 with BetVictor.

There are plenty of teams vying for a top six finish this season and whoever does finish there, will have deserved it. William Hill are offering odds of 8/5 for Spurs to miss out on a top six finish.

Three Trophies Still Up For Grabs

Conte will know, winning the league title this season might be a mountain too high to overcome. But Spurs are still alive in the three cup competitions they started the season in.

Tottenham has a rich tradition of doing well in cup competitions and their fans will happily take cup glory to end their drought since winning the League Cup in 2008 which remains their only success this century.

The Caraboa Cup represents Tottenham's best chance of success this season. They face West Ham in the quarter-finals on December 21 by which time Conte should know his best starting XI. Chelsea and Liverpool lead the Carabao Cup market, but Spurs can be backed at 13/2 with 10Bet to win the League Cup for a fifth time.

Conte has a bit of work to do if he is to achieve success in the inaugural Europa Conference League. Spurs are third in Group G with four points from their three matches, but they can still qualify if they can end their group games well.

Victory over Vitesse Arnhem on Thursday will certainly boost their chances of being the first ever name engraved on the trophy. Unibet are offering odds of 13/2 for Conte and Spurs to win the trophy.

Spurs have won the FA Cup eight times and they are 14/1 with Unibet to win it for a ninth time this season. A lot will depend on the draw, but winning the FA Cup would be seen as a step forward for the club.
