Bet On Unexposed Lecoq

In recent years there’s a trend of more unexposed horses winning the Betfair Hurdle so we are going to tip up two horses who have had few runs in handicap hurdles.

Every Betfair Hurdle winner since Essex in 2005 has been aged five or six and Monsieur Lecoq (7/1 Betfair) is one who fits into that age bracket. Much-travelled, having raced twice in France, he has run only four times over hurdles in Britain and looks the hottest tip in the Betfair Hurdle betting.

The son of Diamond Boy has enjoyed two victories over hurdles this season, including a nine-length handicap debut success at Sandown (2m, soft) last time out.

He has gone up 10lbs in the handicap, but looks capable of overcoming that and will benefit from any rainfall before race time.

Sixth Win For Henderson?

Trainer Nicky Henderson has won the Betfair Hurdle five times, his sole hope this time being the unexposed seven-year-old mare Countister (12/1 Black Type).

The daughter of Smadoun hasn’t been seen in action since finishing 28 lengths fifth in a Grade 2 novice hurdle for mares at last year's Cheltenham Festival, but that will have been her first start on an undulating track and it's likely she is going to be better suited by flatter tracks - as evidenced by her victories at Doncaster and at Sandown.

The runner-up at Sandown, Arthington is now rated 129 and given the relatively easy nature of Countister’s success that day, a mark of 133 for the mare looks lenient for her first start in a handicap hurdle.

Her four starts over hurdles mark her far less exposed than a number of her rivals and it's possible her trainer hasn't run her since March laast year to protect that handicap rating.

Countister, owned by JP McManus, is at home on soft ground, her trainer's impressive 30% strike-rate (36/120) in hurdle races at the Betfair Hurdle course only bolstering her appeal in the Betfair Hurdle betting.
