Key Trials from the last 10 years

  • The Grade 1 Deloitte Novices' Hurdle has seen two winners over the last decade, as well as 2020 runner-up Easywork, while the Lawlor’s Of Naas Novice Hurdle in early January was the path trodden by 2020 winner Envoi Allen.
  • Envoi Allen also won the Champion Bumper at the festival the year before, so pay close attention to any horse that ran well in that contest.
  • Peddlers Cross (2010 winner) won the Grade 2 Rossington Main Novices' Hurdle before romping home in the 2010 Ballymore Novices' Hurdle.
  • A number of Challow Novices' Hurdle and Slaney Novice Hurdle (both G1) winners have been Ballymore place finishers over the last 10 years (Champ, Next Destination, Rule The World & Monksland).

Trainer Trends

  • Willie Mullins is the winning-most trainer with four wins in total, two of which have come in the last decade. He’s also saddled seven placed horses in that time, most recently The Big Getaway who was third in 2020.
  • Gordon Elliott has won two of the last three renewals, indeed he saddled the one-two in 2020.
  • Dermot Weld has the best win percentage in this race, standing at 33% with one win (Windsor Park in 2015) from just three runners.

Jockey Trends

  • Given the strong recent records of Irish powerhouses Mullins and Elliott, it goes without saying that close attention needs to be paid to their respective riders, especially when they have a choice of mounts in the race.
  • Davy Russell has won the race three time in the last 10 years, most recently in 2020.
  • Sam Twiston-Davies and Jack Kennedy are also worth monitoring having had previous scalps here.

How did the trends do last year?

Envoi Allen fit the bill in every respect and, unlike some winners of this race, wasn’t particularly difficult to find – the market certainly rated his chance highly.

Runner-up Easywork was a progressive novice that had finished second in a Grade 1 at Leopardstown on his final start before Cheltenham, so he too was a big trends player.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2021?

The Grade 1 Challow Novices’ Hurdle hasn’t thrown up a Ballymore winner this century but it’s still the best the strongest novice hurdle form of the season so far in Britain, and that means Bravemansgame has to be of strong interest.

He’s the right age, has the right profile, has run in the right races and on galloping tracks, and looks a machine. However, this is one of the few Cheltenham Festival races that Paul Nicholls has still not won.

Irish raider Gaillard Du Mesnil has yet to win a Grade 1 contest (although that may change at the Dublin Racing Festival in February) but he looks a potential star for the Willie Mullins’ team.

This talented French-bred gelding absolutely hosed up in a maiden hurdle at Leopardstown, just his second start for Mullins, who has such a good record in this race, and that form has since been boosted by the third horse who bolted up next time.
