Key Trials for the Cheltenham Mares' Novices' Hurdle

A clear pattern with regards to stepping-stone races has yet to emerge but Willie Mullins does prefer to test his contenders at Fairyhouse or Leopardstown.

  • The Grade 3 Solerina Mares' Novice Hurdle at Fairyhouse has been won by two winners of this race (Limini & Laurina). Minella Melody won the 2020 renewal.
  • The 2019 and 2020 winners were both beaten on their final start before the festival, so it’s clear that Mullins is capable of getting his runners to step up markedly on previous form on the big day.

Trainer Trends

  • This race has been completely dominated by Willie Mullins in its five-year history. The Closutton trainer has won all five races, trained the first two home in 2019 and saddled four of the first five home in 2020.

Jockey Trends

  • It goes without saying that anyone who rides for Willie Mullins needs to be kept onside. The last two winners weren’t favourites (2019 winner was 50/1) so look beyond the obvious names, like Paul Townend, whose only success in the race came on Laurina in 2018.

How did the trends do last year?

Concertista, a French Flat winner with a progressive profile over hurdles for Willie Mullins, was clearly a big form chance despite not having won a race over obstacles. She had actually finished second at 66/1 in this race 12 months earlier, making her the first winner that had previously run in the contest.

The market favoured Minella Melody on the day but Concertista dismantled her rivals, running out an emphatic 12-length winner (only Laurina has so far won the race by further). Concertista became the first 6-year-old to win the race.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2021?

Gauloise looks a very smart mare for Willie Mullins and this looks the obvious race for her at the Cheltenham Festival. Unbeaten in three starts, including a French bumper, she fairly hosed up in a Listed mares’ novice event at Thurles in December and could go off a very short price on the day.

She is due to run in the Solerina Stakes at Fairyhouse on Monday and, if she wins that, she’ll deservedly be a warm order to extend Willie Mullins’s formidable mares’ novice hurdle record in March.
