Ahead of the showpiece, most of the talk has been about either Lionel Messi’s form or VAR, neither of which have covered themselves in glory. However, that narrative has also taken away from what an incredibly exciting tournament this has been, with, as usual, its fair share of ups and downs.
Despite being outplayed in their semi-final, conceding two thirds of possession to La Roja, Peru scored with their only three shots on target. A 4-2-3-1 formation ensured that when Chile’s wide men looked to break, there simply wasn’t the room for them to work in.
With Brazil playing in much the same way and relying on their full-backs to overlap, any success that Peru can get from the match will come as a result of stopping the supply into the front men in the central attacking areas. Easier said than done of course, as Brazil’s movement up top has been spectacular throughout this edition of the tournament.
So much so that Neymar has been something of an afterthought. With Arthur Melo and Casemiro forming a wonderful pairing in defensive midfield too, opposition teams have found it incredibly difficult to penetrate in the danger areas. Even when they’ve managed to evade Thiago Silva and Co., Alisson Becker has been in top form in goal.
Believe In Jesus
With attacking talent in abundance, and in front of a partisan home crowd, Brazil’s only concern is getting over-excited and deviating from the brief given to them by Tite before the game.
Coutinho, Firmino and Everton have all played their part so far in goalscoring terms, though it’s Gabriel Jesus out of all of La Selecao’s attackers that looks the brightest at this point.
Scoring one and assisting another against Argentina, the Manchester City man was at his impish best.
Firmino has enough about him to keep both Abram and Zambrano occupied in the centre of Peru’s defence, with Dani Alves’ movement down the right-side imperative to draw Yotun out of the space he occupies between Abram and left-back, Trauco.
In so doing, it will allow Jesus the chance to work in a pocket just outside of the area and, with the pace he has, opportunities to get beyond the last defender and into a position for a shot on goal.
With Peru goalkeeper Gallese in fine form during their semi-final win, his tail will be up, but he can’t rely on his centre-backs to stem the tide.
With that in mind, don’t be surprised to see wave upon wave of Brazilian attacks, particularly in the early stages.
Jesus is ready to be the difference maker again, and he is 16/5 with 888Sport to score first.

Back Brazil For Goals
Having already lost 5-0 to Brazil in the group stages, no one is giving Peru much hope of turning the tables so soon after such a humiliating loss.
Ricardo Gareca will send his troops out believing that they have what it takes to cause an upset, but the truth is that unless Brazil are incredibly complacent, and Peru happen to have the game of their lives, this match is only heading one way.
As if to emphasise the point, Peru have already been goalless against Venezuela, Uruguay and Brazil so far in the competition. By contrast, the hosts haven’t conceded a single goal so far.
A mixture of a solid defence, hard-working midfield and rapier-like attack has ensured that no team has been able to live with them. Their ‘samba style’ has been served up with some steely grit this time around, so if Tite’s men can’t win by playing joga bonito, a more rudimentary way to get a result has been acceptable.
What’s telling is the fitness levels of the Brazilians compared to the other teams at the tournament, as the hosts haven’t looked tired in any of their matches so far.
Having not even conceded since the Copa began, they’re now 90 minutes away from winning the tournament with an almost perfect record (0-0 draws with Venezuela and Paraguay notwithstanding).
To that end, and with Peru able to be picked off as they become more desperate to get into the game against superior opponents, a 3-0 win isn’t beyond the realms of possibility.
MansionBet are offering 27/4 for that result to occur.
