Euro 2020 Delayed Until 2021

All major domestic leagues in Europe have been postponed until further notice due to the well publicised Coronavirus outbreak. This has led to consternation among supporters about each league will finish.

To help clubs finish their respective seasons, UEFA has postponed the 2020 European Championships until 2021. Euro 2020 was due to start on June 12, 2020, in Rome and finish in London one month later.

However, UEFA is now planning to host the tournament from June 11 to July 11, 2021 instead. This is an unprecedented decision, but one that had to be made with a plethora of leagues to be decided!

The 2020 Copa América has also been pushed back by a year.

Will Liverpool Be Given The Premier League Trophy?

Liverpool's fans are understandably very anxious about this season being brought to a premature end. With a twenty-five point lead, it does seem quite reasonable that they should just be handed the title.

After 30 years of waiting to win the Premier League, they could now be forced to wait even longer. There have been calls from some sectors for this season to be voided. It's no surprise with West Ham in such trouble to see the likes of Karen Brady, the club's Vice-Chairperson, calling for the season to be discontinued and start from scratch in August.

Leeds United and West Brom, who have both built up a nice lead as the top two in the Championship, are also quite anxious as not gaining promotion to the Premier League will prove to be a massive issue financially.

One of the options reportedly on the table is an idea that is expected to be adopted in a number of Europe’s top leagues: Cancelling this season, promoting the top two clubs from the Championship — Leeds and West Brom — and having a one-time-only, 22-team league with five relegation spots. In this circumstance, Liverpool would also be given the title.

One thing we know for sure though it that we have no idea if and when the Premier League will indeed return.

Where We Stand With Europe's Top Leagues

There is plenty to be decided in all of Europe's top leagues. If this pandemic continues much longer it could be quite interesting as to how they decide who wins the league and who gets relegated.

  • England: Liverpool are twenty five points clear and the league title looks fairly wrapped up. Champions League and Europa League spaces are up in the air, with plenty of teams still in with a shout to reach the European promise land. There's also the small matter of relegation with only four points between 19th and 15th.
  • Scotland: Celtic appear to have the Scottish Premiership won, with the only question remaining being who will end up going down with Hearts bottom by four points.
  • Spain: La Liga is the closest of the remaining tables with only two points separating Barcelona and Real Madrid. It really is too close to call. There is very little between the sides at the bottom of the table either with only seven points between twentieth and fifteenth. There's a lot to be decided in Spain!
  • Italy: 2020 looked like the year where Juventus might actually end up losing the Serie A title they've held onto for several years now with Lazio only one point behind. Relegation is also far from decided with only five points between 13th and 18th.
