With Steven Gerrard taking over as Aston Villa manager, Rangers begin their search for a replacement. Gerrard leaves the Scottish Premier League outfit in decent shape after steering them to the domestic title last season and there will be plenty of interested parties when it comes to taking the role.

In this article, we look at the leading contenders in the 'next Rangers manager' betting market, with Giovanni van Bronckhorst the early favourite in the market, although Russell Martin and Derek McInnes are other names in the frame.

Van Bronckhorst Favourite to Replace Gerrard

There is plenty of speculation surrounding the prospect of Giovanni Van Bronckhorst taking charge at Ibrox. The 46-year-old enjoyed a playing spell with Rangers and has a decent amount of managerial experience, largely down to his spell with Feyenoord between 2015-2019.

Van Bronckhorst might find Gerrard a difficult act to follow and this is clearly a high pressure role where finishing above Celtic is the be-all and end-all. The Dutchman recently had a spell with Chinese Super League club Guangzhou R&F although it was a short-lived position.

Russell Martin Also Has a Rangers Connection

On the one hand, it seems improbable that Russell Martin will leave Swansea just a few months after departing MK Dons to take charge at the Welsh club. On the other, the Scot could find the prospect of following in the footsteps of Steven Gerrard an irresistible one.

Martin has the world at his feet at the age of 35. He has been hugely impressive when taking charge of MK Dons and making them into an attractive football side and appears to be doing the same thing with the Swans.

Martin enjoyed a brief loan spell at Rangers during his playing days and is currently trading at single figure odds. It will be interesting to see whether he throws his hat into the ring here.

McInnes Has Huge Amount of SPL Experience

Could this be the time where Derek McInnes finally takes charge of an Old Firm club? The Scot was in charge of Aberdeen between 2013 and 2021, with the 50-year-old certainly making an impression at Pittodrie considering that he steered the Dons into Europe on several occasions.

McInnes has been a free agent since being sacked by Aberdeen in March 2021, with the Scot having previously turned out for Rangers as a player and he helped them win the Scottish Premier League title in 1997, as well as the Scottish Cup in 1999.

Lampard and Terry Next in the Rangers Betting

One gets the feeling that John Terry will be linked with a number of vacant roles over the coming months without necessarily taking a job. The same might apply to Frank Lampard despite being closely linked to the Norwich City position.

Lampard has more experience of being in a managerial hot seat after his spells with Derby County and Chelsea, with the former England midfielder potentially looking to follow in the footsteps of international team-mate Gerrard.

Terry might also think this is an attractive position, with the former England captain having kept his powder dry since leaving Dean Smith's backroom team at Villa Park a few months ago.
