Only a few weeks ago it was Derek McInnes who was looking nailed-on to be next Sunderland manager with his price tumbling to odds-on following reports that he was in talks with the Black Cats, however it appears that he feels his future is best served by remaining at Pittodrie for the foreseeable future. Can we really blame him? After all Aberdeen reached two cup finals last season and finished as runners-up in the Scottish Premiership with only runaway champions Celtic denying them on all three occasions.
In contrast the situation at the Stadium of Light is far less rosy and whoever takes charge certainly has a massive task on his hands. As things stand, the man faced with such a daunting task looks set to be Preston North End's Simon Grayson with the bookies clearly feeling that he will be replacing recently departed David Moyes in the hot-seat. Is he really the right person to lift Sunderland into the Premier League? Perhaps not, although the smart money seems to be heading in his direction.
Grayson has an excellent record having lifted Huddersfield Town, Blackpool and Preston North End from League One into the Championship, however question marks remain over his ability to steer the Black Cats into the top-flight.
Sunderland legend Kevin Phillips has been bouncing up and down the betting market since the departure of Moyes and he currently sits third favourite at 14/1 behind Nigel Pearson at 10/1. Pearson possesses plenty of experience in the Championship with Hull City, Derby County and Leicester City and would prove a popular choice amongst supporters.
