Bruno Lage looks set to be announced as the next manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers, with the Midlands club continuing with their policy of hiring Portuguese coaches and the 45-year-old comes with lots of experience. He was in charge of Benfica during the 2019-20 season and has previously been assistant to Carlos Carvalhal at both Sheffield Wednesday and Swansea City.

Who is the Favourite to Be Next Wolves Manager?

Bruno Lage might not be a household name in England, although it could be that the owners of Wolverhampton Wanderers continue with their Portuguese approach and hire someone who has plenty of managerial experience after being in charge of Benfica during the 2019-20 season.

Lage has previously been assistant manager at Swansea City and Sheffield Wednesday, where he supported coach Carlos Carvalhal. It could be that a return to England is on the cards considering that top bookies are making the 45-year-old a strong favourite to take the reins and lead Wolves into battle next term.

Lage might look like a risky pick considering the stability that Nuno enjoyed in charge at Molineux and he has regularly been an assistant during his career rather than number one. Bruno left Benfica under a cloud despite winning the 2019 Primeira Liga title and his departure highlighted his managerial strengths as the side struggled for form the following season.

Rafael Benitez Among Favourites to Be Wolves Boss

No next football manager market is complete without the presence of Rafael Benitez. The Spaniard is currently a free agent after recently leaving Chinese Super League club Dalian Professional and the former Liverpool boss has made it clear that he is open to a new position in the Premier League.

Benitez has previously experienced lots of success in England when taking charge of Liverpool, Chelsea and Newcastle United, with the former Real Madrid boss looking for a project where the club owners will back him in the transfer market and he will certainly want assurances with regard to squad additions.

Benitez has steered Newcastle back into the Premier League from the English Championship and would inherit a talented squad, while there seems to be a conveyor belt of talent coming through from Portugal, although the prospect of the Spaniard winning silverware at this club would look to be a remote one.

Could Sérgio Conceição Make Switch from Porto?

Sérgio Conceição is a highly-respected manager who has achieved great things at FC Porto and it’s hard to get away from the fact that Wolverhampton Wanderers will leverage that Portuguese connection to potentially secure someone of that nationality to take charge of a squad with so many players from that country.

Conceição recently masterminded a Champions League success over Juventus while in charge of Porto before they were caught short against Manchester City, with the manager having steered the Portuguese club to two Primeira Liga titles and the 46-year-old was previously in charge at French club Nantes.

This is likely to be a popular appointment with the Wolves fans considering that this manager’s track record is impressive and it might be that Sérgio Conceição has taken Porto as far as he can, with this being an opportunity to make his mark in the English Premier League.

Paulo Fonseca Also Among Wolves Manager Favourites

Fonseca is another Portuguese manager in the running for the Molineux job, with the former Roma manager having recently left the Stadio Olimpico and he might be keen to throw his hat into the ring as far as replacing Nuno Espirito Santo is concerned.

The 48-year-old is highly respected in the game and he has previously been in charge at Porto, Braga and Shakhtar Donetsk, with Fonseca having won the Ukrainian Premier League on three occasions with the latter and perhaps he would be regarded as having the right amount of experience to steer the Wolves ship.

Lopetegui and Lampard Also on the Wolves Shortlist

Julen Lopetegui is an interesting contender, with the current manager of Sevilla potentially open to switching to Wolverhampton Wanderers after a number of high-profile positions including the Spanish national team and Real Madrid.

Things didn't turn out well for Lopetegui at Real although a move to England could potentially be on the cards and we should note that Nuno was a relatively unknown manager before arriving at Molineux.

Frank Lampard is currently a free agent following his sacking at Chelsea a few months ago although the former Derby County manager could be open to a move to the Midlands club and have the opportunity to resurrect his career in coaching.

Lampard will have learnt plenty from his short stint at Stamford Bridge and it should be noted that the team did reach the Champions League spots while the club were under a transfer embargo.
