Key Trials from the last 10 years

To run in the 2020 Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, horses must have finished in the first six in one or more of the 2019/20 qualifying Pertemps Hurdle Series races.

  • Three of the last four winners (Sire Du Berlais, Mall Dini & Presenting Percy) finished between fourth & sixth in the Leopardstown Pertemps Hurdle Race on December 28. Tout Est Permis, High Sparrow & The Storyteller filled those placings in 2019.
  • Three of the last four winners (Delta Work, Mall Dini & Presenting Percy) finished third or fourth in the Punchestown Pertemps Hurdle Race. The 2020 running is on February 19..

Trainer Trends

  • With 2 winners each, Gordon Elliott, Pat Kelly and David Pipe have won six of the last 10 runnings. Kelly is actually 2/2! Elliott has the second-best record at 2/8, with three of the six losers placing second, third or fourth.

Jockey Trends

  • Davy Russell has ridden three of the last four winners, so looks the man to follow in the Pertemps. He recently rode The Storyteller at Leopardstown for Gordon Elliott.
  • Barry Geraghty rode his belated second Pertemps Final winner in 2019 on Sire Du Berlais.

How did the trends do last year?

It's never easy to find the winner of a Cheltenham Festival handicap, but the trends did pick three of the first four home in the 2019 Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle, including winner Sire Du Berlais.

Half of the last 10 winners of the Pertemps Final Handicap Hurdle had never won a handicap hurdle before, the remainder winning no more than two. This is a key trend to follow, and one that applied to winner Sire Du Berlais, and fourth Cuneo.

Sire Du Berlais was more highly-rated than most winners, and booked for plenty of weight at 11st 9lb, but had to be respected coming from the yard of top race trainer Gordon Elliott.

Fitting particularly well into the 10-year-trends was third Not Many Left, who had run up to Grade 3 level as a novice and had won last time out on handicap debut over 3m1f.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2020?

Right now it is The Storyteller who best fits the Pertemps Final Trends. He ran in the right trial, has the right jockey, and the right trainer, has won this season and has never won a handicap hurdle before.

As a bonus, he's also won a Cheltenham Festival handicap chase before.
