Key Trials from the last 10 years

To run in the 2021 Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, horses must have finished in the first six in one or more of the 2020/21 qualifying Pertemps Hurdle Series races.

  • Three of the last five winners (Sire Du Berlais, Mall Dini & Presenting Percy) finished between fourth & sixth in the Leopardstown Pertemps Hurdle Race on December 28. 2020 winner Sire Du Berlais again ran in the Leopardstown race but could only finish 9th.
  • Three of the last five winners (Delta Work, Mall Dini & Presenting Percy) finished third or fourth in the Punchestown Pertemps Hurdle Race.

Trainer Trends

  • Jonjo O’Neill leads the way with four wins in this contest, but only one of those (2013) has come in the last decade.
  • The form trainer is undoubtedly Gordon Elliott who has won the last three editions of the race and he even saddled the first and second in 2020.
  • Pat Kelly and David Pipe have each won the raced twice, indeed Kelly has only had two runners, earning him a one hundred per cent strike-rate!
  • Irish trainers are on a roll here, winning the last five renewals.

Jockey Trends

  • Davy Russell is undoubtedly the in-form rider in the Pertemps. He’s ridden three winners and a second in the last five years. No jockey has won the race more than three times in its history.
  • Barry Geraghty rode his belated second Pertemps Final winner in 2019 on Sire Du Berlais.

How did the trends do last year?

Sire Du Berlais was winning the race for the second time, putting him in an elite group of horses. He did fit the bill from many trends angles but he could only finish 9th in the Leopardstown qualifier, which some may have seen as a sign that he wasn’t quite at the same level as the previous season.

The other negative to his chance was that he was carrying topweight, something that has tended to stop horses in this race in recent years.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2021?

The Bosses Oscar, trained by man of the moment Gordon Elliott, heads ante-post Pertemps Final betting lists after finishing second in the Leopardstown qualifier on December 28 – a race that is always a key pointer to this final. He ran well when fifth in the 2019 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival and it looks like he’s still very much on the up.

The most taking home challenger looks to be Imperial Alcazar, a most impressive winner of a Warwick qualifier in January. Lightly-raced and on the up, he looks at home on slow ground so his Cheltenham prospects would increase if conditions were on the soft side.
