Key Trials from the last 10 years

To run in the 2022 Pertemps Final at the Cheltenham Festival, horses must have finished in the first six in one or more of the 2020/21 qualifying Pertemps Hurdle Series races.

  • Four of the last six winners (Mrs Milner, Sire Du Berlais, Mall Dini and Presenting Percy) finished between fourth and sixth in the Leopardstown Pertemps Hurdle Race on December 28. 2020 winner Sire Du Berlais again ran in the Leopardstown race before his second Pertemps Final win, but could only finish ninth.
  • Three of the last six winners (Delta Work, Mall Dini and Presenting Percy) finished third or fourth in the Punchestown Pertemps Hurdle Race in January/February, though this now takes place in November.

Trainer Trends

  • Jonjo O’Neill leads the way with four wins in this contest, but only one of those (2013) has come in the last decade.
  • The form trainer is undoubtedly Gordon Elliott who has won three of the last four editions of the race.
  • Pat Kelly and David Pipe have each won the raced twice, Kelly doing so with only two runners, earning himself a 100% strike-rate!
  • Trainers based in Ireland have won the last six renewals.

Jockey Trends

  • Davy Russell is the in-form rider in the Pertemps. He’s ridden three winners and a second in the last six years. No jockey has won the race more than three times in its history.

How did the trends do last year?

Mrs Milner went into the trends notebook after finishing fourth in that key Leopardstown trial, but the recent trend had been for a less exposed hurdler to win.

Mrs Milner had run in more hurdle races overall and more handicap hurdles than the vast majority of the 10 winners before her, and at 134 is the lowest-rated winner of the race in more than 11 years by upwards of 4lbs.

Second The Bosses Oscar, sent off 100/30f, fit the trends better. He'd finished second in the Leopardstown qualifier and been fifth in the 2019 Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Festival. He did have topweight, but so did stablemate Sire Du Berlais when winning in 2020.

Horses carrying 11st 9lb or more have won four of the last eight renewals.

Who Fits The Trends Best In 2022?

Dunboyne, trained by man of the moment Gordon Elliott, heads ante-post Pertemps Final betting lists after finishing fifth in the Leopardstown qualifier on December 28 – a race that is always a key pointer to this final.

That was his fourth handicap hurdle outing and seventh hurdle run overall, leaving him very unexposed and sure to improve. His maiden hurdle win came at Thurles last year over 2m7f.

Stablemate Dallas Des Pictons, fifth in last year's Martin Pipe Handicap Hurdle at the Festival, is a bit more exposed with a lot more hurdle outings, but is another worth noting having finished second in the Punchestown Pertemps qualifier.

For the home team, Alaphilippe fits the bill perfectly, with three wins in six hurdle outings, including over 3m. He also quietly finished fifth in the Warwick Pertempts qualifier on his only outing this term, having signed off last season with fifth in the Grade 1 Albert Bartlett Novices' Hurdle at the Cheltenham Festival.

The eight-year-old's current rating of 138 over hurdles is ideal, though the caveat is that he does seem to prefer soft ground.
