Chris Hughton has been sacked by Nottingham Forest, with the club bottom of the Championship and there is now speculation over who could be brought in to replace him.

The former Brighton boss struggled badly to get a tune out of the Tricky Trees this season, with Hughton given his marching orders and it will be interesting to see who can come in and make an impact at the City Ground.

The bookies are currently preparing their next Nottingham Forest manager betting market and this includes Steve Cooper, Chris Wilder, John Terry and Alex Neil.

Big Sam Allardyce is no stranger to being a rescue act and he could be interested in a short-term fix at the Midlands club, while Roy Keane has been out of management for a while, but has the obvious Forest connection.

Eddie Howe has been out of work since the end of the 2019/20 season and perhaps the former Bournemouth manager would relish the challenge of taking on a historic club who have fallen on hard times, with Nigel Clough also being linked to the role, although it could be that someone like Tony Pulis is better suited.

Cooper, Terry and Wilder Among Early Favourites

Steve Cooper recently stood down as manager of Swansea City after deciding against a new contract at the Liberty Stadium. It means that he’s currently a free agent and he was favourite to become manager of Crystal Palace before the London club decided on Patrick Vieira instead.

Cooper, 1/2 favourite with BetVictor, is potentially going to be interested in this role and has shown himself to be adept in the English second tier although one wonders if he is able to get the right assurances with a role such as this one considering he passed up the opportunity to continue his time with the Welsh club.

Similarly, Chris Wilder is someone who has experienced success in the Championship with Sheffield United and he could be open to the idea of setting about restoring the fortunes of Forest, with Wilder having previously steered the Blades from League One to the Premier League before parting company last season. Wilder is 5/2 with BetVictor to replace Hughton.

John Terry has recently decided to leave Aston Villa and it might be interesting to see him take this challenge at the City Ground despite being well short of experience. Terry worked under Dean Smith at Villa Park and he’s been included on the betting shortlist here and can be backed at 5/1 with BetVictor.

Would Roy Keane Consider a Return to Forest?

Roy Keane has managed in the Championship before when in charge of Sunderland, with the 50-year-old having managed the Black Cats between 2006 and 2008. He was then in charge at Ipswich Town between 2009 and 2011, with Keane more recently having been assistant manager for the Republic of Ireland team along with stints at Aston Villa and Nottingham Forest.

As a former Forest player, it’s clear that he has a connection with the Midlands club although much would depend on whether Keane would consider it an attractive option considering that a relegation dogfight is almost certainly on the cards right now. The outspoken Irishman has a number of media roles and might opt to stick with them, but he can be backed at 25/1 with BetVictor.

Could Neil Lennon Take Charge at City Ground?

Neil Lennon is another 50-year-old with aspirations to return to football management. The Northern Irishman has held a coaching role in the Championship before when taking charge of Bolton Wanderers between 2014-16, with the manager more recently in charge at Celtic for a second stint between 2019-2021, although he was ultimately forced out of the exit door.

Lennon might be keen to jump back into football management, with this role offering him the chance to rebuild his reputation and create a siege mentality at the City Ground. Lennon is 25/1 with BetVictor to be Forest next permanent manager.

Lennon might also be able to leverage his contact book and recruit players who are capable of making the right impact.

Steven Reid Might Be Promoted From Within

Steven Reid has only recently become first team coach at Nottingham Forest and it could well be the case that the 40-year-old now gets the chance to audition for the role while in caretaker charge of the Tricky Trees.

Reid is highly regarded and was previously part of Steve Clarke’s Scotland coaching set-up, with the former midfielder having been assistant to Jimmy Shan at West Brom.

Reid is a capable coach who is young enough to learn quickly on the job and he would also be the cheap option for Nottingham Forest, with the club hardly blessed with money and looking for someone who can earn some quick victories to avoid relegation to League One.

Eddie Howe Could Be What Forest Need

Since leaving AFC Bournemouth after several years with the Cherries, Eddie Howe has not been seen at a football club despite being linked to plenty of outfits.

This includes Celtic where he was expected to replace Neil Lennon last summer, although that deal fell through and the former Burnley manager continues to be a free agent. Howe is 20/1 with BetVictor to replace Hughton at the City Ground.

Howe would probably have some strong ideas when it comes to managing in the Championship and perhaps the Nottingham Forest owners might go in search of someone who has plenty of pedigree when it comes to getting teams promoted, although the manager might not regard this as the most attractive of opportunities.
