We’ve had to wait an extra year for the 43rd Ryder Cup which promises to be one of the best in recent years. The rivalry between Europe’s best golfers against their American counterparts have been one-sided affairs in recent contests. But many of the leading bookmakers believe this year's contest could be one of the closest battles as Europe look to defend their title at Whistling Straits in Wisconsin. USA starts as 8/15 favourites with William Hill to regain the Ryder Cup while Europe are 9/4 with MansionBet to retain the trophy.

Confidence is high within the American camp with 11 Major wins in the last 14. However, Europe have Jon Rahm who is ranked the number one golfer in the world after winning the US Open at Torrey Pines earlier this year. When the trophy is presented to either Steve Stricker from the American team or Padraig Harrington from the European team, we will hopefully have witnessed three compelling days of golf.

European Experience Against Rookie Americans

The two captains have gone for contrasting team set-ups. Stricker has gone for inexperience leaving Patrick Reed out of his team for this year's battle. Stricker opted for six wild cards when he was named captain. Of the 12 players he has chosen, six will be making their Ryder Cup debuts in Wisconsin. One of those will be Collin Morikawa who has two two of the last six Majors played.

Harrington has done his best to keep the continuity flowing within the European squad. His vice captains are former players and just three of his 12 players will be experiencing the competition for the first time.

Two of his three wild cards have gone to Sergio Garcia and Ian Poulter who have played 63 Ryder Cup matches between them. The entire American team has played a combined total of 48 matches.

It's easy to see why the two captains have gone for the squads they have. The six American rookies will be cheered on by the partisan crowd following the players around the Whistling Straits course over the three days. The majority of the European team have played in the Ryder Cup in America and therefore they will know exactly what to expect and they will once again feed off that.

Poulter to Deliver Once Again

Ian Poulter's win at the Houston Open in April 2018 remains his only win in the last nine years. But when it comes to the Ryder Cup, it almost seems like Poulter was made to play in the Ryder Cup. When Europe need a spark, he is usually the player to provide it. Look no further than Medinah, when his display on the Saturday evening inspired one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the competition.

Nicknamed the Postman, because he always delivers, Poulter will once again be called upon to play a vital role for the team. Harrington knows his ability to perform under the immense pressure the Ryder Cup provides and he's not going to be a captain's pick to sit in the sidelines waiting for the singles on Sunday.

The Americans know Poulter could be the difference maker once again. In the 22 matches Poulter has played, he's been beaten just six times. The 45-year-old is 12/1 with Bet365 to be Europe's leading point scorer.

Thomas to Lead the Way for America

Justin Thomas is ranked sixth in the world and Thomas rarely disappoints when the stakes are raised on the big stage. The 28-year-old has a great record in the Ryder Cup winning four of the five matches he has played.

No American player earned his team more points than Thomas three years ago. Thomas' partnership with Jordan Spieth worked very well for Jim Furyk in Paris when the pair won three of the four matches they were paired together and it would make sense for Stricker to stick with them again this time.

A former winner of the PGA Championship and winner of the Players Championship earlier this year, Thomas will be a match for any Europe pairing he comes up against at Whistling Straits. Thomas is 7/1 with BetVictor to be USA's leading point scorer.

Unrest In The American Camp

The beauty with the Ryder Cup is that it is played in various match play formats including fourballs, foursomes and singles. Playing in a team environment suits some players while others who prefer to be individuals have struggled to fit in. One of the burning issues this year is how the American team will cope if both Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau make the team.

The pair have been involved in a long-running on and off the course and while each insists there is no problem, we have yet to see them in close proximity like this. It’s unlikely the pair will play alongside each other, but if there is a split in the camp towards one or the other, it could improve Europe’s chances when this year’s Ryder Cup odds are put together.

Several players have done enough to make their respective teams with Collin Morikawa and Dustin Johnson safely on Team USA who are favourites to regain the Ryder Cup on home soil. while Jon Rahm, Tommy Fleetwood, Tyrell Hatton and Rory McIlroy look to have done enough to ensure they will be representing Team Europe in Wisconsin.

Bet On The Winning Margin

One of the key Ryder Cup betting tips revolves around the winning margin which in the last three contests have been five points or more with Europe coming out on top in two of those. In fact, the European Team has lifted the trophy at the end of four of the last five competitions. If you receive a free bet from one of your chosen bookmakers, why not use it on predicting the winning margin this time around.

Golf betting is becoming more and more popular and because the crowds following the action at Whistling Straits voice their support like a football match, it appeals to sports fans more. Because of this fresh interest in golf, bookmakers will hope to attract these floating bettors by offering a free bet or two. Some might require a qualifying bet be placed first, but the reward might well be worth it.

Between now and the start of the 43rd Ryder Cup, there will be plenty of golf tips to check out highlighting which player might accumulate the most points over the three days of action in a three-day golf tournament like no other. There will be plenty of betting markets to choose from before the tournament and also during the competition with plenty of in-play markets to keep your interest.

Cash out markets in a competition like this will be offered by many of the leading sportsbook which could come in handy if the team you backed suddenly start to lose the healthy lead they had worked hard to establish.

Benefit From In Play Markets

Played over three days, the live betting markets are worth keeping an eye on. One team might start the second or third day with a commanding lead, but we have seen many times how momentum can change so quickly with a birdie or a wayward tee shot. The scoreboard, with the scores in red for American and blue for Europe, can look good one minute and suddenly leave you wondering where a team’s next point is going to come from.

Contested over three days, keeping up to date with the action might prove tricky as life often gets in the way. Therefore, having an impressive app to follow the scores on is important to bettors which is why bookmakers have invested a lot of time and money to ensure their betting apps are up to the standard required by their customers.

One of the biggest comebacks in the history of the Ryder Cup came at Medinah Golf Club in Illinois in 2012, when Europe started the final day trailing 10-6 with the 12 singles matches to play. Their odds drifted to 26/1 with Team USA needing to win just four and a half points to regain the trophy.

But Jose Maria Olazabal’s team secured a famous 14.5-13.5 win thanks to Martin Kaymer’s winning putt to beat Stricker. Europe, who are underdogs to retain the Ryder Cup, will hope they won't have to pull off another miracle this time.

The question you have to answer is whether a player who did well in the Fedex Cup or won multiple times on the PGA Tour can handle the unique atmosphere of the Ryder Cup. To see how passionate the crowds - and players - can get, simply check out the footage from Kaiwah Island which is fondly remembered as ‘The War On The Shore’.

For members of the European Team, the Ryder Cup is the only team environment they are likely to experience. Some members of Team USA will have played in the President’s Cup which is played against a Rest of the World team without any European players. Will this be reflected in this year's Ryder Cup betting tips?

Europe will hope Harrington can continue Europe’s impressive run of victories while the home supporters will hope Stricker can do what Corey Pavin, Davis Love III, Tom Watson and Jim Furyk failed to do in 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018. Whatever happens, the leading bookmakers will have betting markets galore bringing out the very latest odds from arguably the highlight of any golfing calendar.
