August 21st Update: The Final – Birmingham Phoenix vs. Southern Brave

TipOdds
Birmingham Phoenix to winEVS with Betfair
Moeen Ali to be top Birmingham Phoenix batter9/2 with William Hill

Here we are. After 33 matches, we have the final of the first Hundred. Last night’s eliminator was something of a blowout and confirmed my hunch that Trent Rockets were somewhat fortunate to reach the top three. My wallet may be talking here but I thought Oval Invincibles were a better side and only a No Result against the London Spirit, a match they probably would have won, denied them a spot in the latter stages.

For the Rockets to fire, they needed Alex Hales in form and he failed once again. This time, there was no one else to carry the batting but all credit to Southern Brave captain James Vince. His gameplan of starting and finishing with pace worked a treat and we can expect more of the same in tonight’s finale.

Vince also led by example with the bat, but Brave face a Birmingham Phoenix bang in form and with skipper Moeen Ali temporarily back from England duty. Phoenix have lost opener Finn Allen to a New Zealand call-up.

One advantage for Brave is that they have played at Lord’s this tournament, somehow defending 145 despite London Spirit reaching 68 without loss at the end of the 25-ball powerplay. George Garton, who excelled last night, and Chris Jordan took two wickets apiece with the latter superb at the death.

After two defeats, Brave claimed their first win of the campaign against Phoenix in a thriller at Southampton. They have run rampant since, but it is hard to see things going quite as well for them as they did last night. In the middle overs, Moeen and Liam Livingstone will fancy their chances of going after spinner Jake Lintott with Moeen keen to make amends after falling to the wildcard for a duck in their previous meeting.

This is also a chance for bowlers to push claims for the T20 World Cup with Phoenix’s Adam Milne and Brave’s Garton and Tymal Mills all in the mix. On paper, Brave have the superior attack with Birmingham boasting the greater batting firepower. But who will prevail?

It’s an encounter which really could go either way, but preference is for Phoenix with their matchwinners at the top of the order so I have to recommend the even money with Betfair. Value is pretty hard to find but William Hill’s enhanced 9/2 about Moeen top scoring for Phoenix is generous with the England man showing on previous T20 Blast Finals Days that he’s a man for the big occasion.

July 20 - Tournament Preview - The Hundred Betting Tips

TipOdds

The Hundred is the new English short-form cricket tournament designed to bring new audiences to the sport. There are eight city-based teams created specially for the tournament with men’s and women’s sides largely playing fixtures back-to-back. The inaugural edition of The Hundred runs from 21 July to 21 August.

The tournament is sure to be fiercely contested with the format meaning one short spell of brutal batting or superb bowling could be enough to swing a match one way or the other. Most top betting sites are offering odds on The Hundred, and there’s plenty of value to be found if you’re interested in a punt.

A team with more proven game changers (big hitters or wicket-taking bowlers) is likely to have better chances in The Hundred, and that will certainly be the basis for my betting tips. There has been a late spanner in the works with England Test stars, including Ben Stokes, set to be ruled out due to the ECB bringing in stricter Covid protocols ahead of the series against India.

We will look at the men’s tournament in detail shortly, but I’m very taken by Birmingham Phoenix in the women’s event. They boast England wicketkeeper Amy Jones, exciting young quick Issy Wong, and India’s teenage sensation Shafali Verma plus proven players in T20 cricket. Their odds of 11/2 outright with Paddy Power certainly look interesting.

Birmingham Phoenix

Home ground: Edgbaston

Counties: Warwickshire, Worcestershire

Men’s coach: Daniel Vettori

Men’s squad: Moeen Ali (£100k, captain, all-rounder), Chris Woakes (England central contract, bowler), Dom Sibley (England central contract, batter), Tom Abell (£80k, batter), Finn Allen (£80k, New Zealand, wicketkeeper), Daniel Bell-Drummond (£32k, batter), Pat Brown (£48k, bowler), Chris Cooke (£24k, wicketkeeper), Miles Hammond (£24k, batter), Tom Helm (£60k, bowler), Adam Hose (£40k, batter), Benny Howell (£60k, all-rounder), Liam Livingstone (£100k, all-rounder), Adam Milne (£48k, New Zealand, bowler), Dillon Pennington (T20 Blast wildcard, bowler), Will Smeed (£32k, batter), Imran Tahir (£40k, South Africa, bowler).

There’s experience and talent in abundance in the Birmingham Phoenix squad courtesy of local favourites Moeen Ali and Chris Woakes, plus the ageless and exuberant leg-spinner Imran Tahir whose aeroplane celebrations are sure to get an outing at Edgbaston. Liam Livingstone has impressed in England colours while Daniel Bell-Drummond and Finn Allen have had excellent T20 Blasts, but the Phoenix are perhaps one or two gamechangers short of being title contenders.

London Spirit

Home ground: Lord’s

Counties: Middlesex, Essex, Northants

Men’s coach: Shane Warne

Men’s squad: Eoin Morgan (£100k, captain, batter), Zak Crawley (England central contract, batter), Mohammad Amir (£80k, Pakistan, bowler), Ravi Bopara (£60k, all-rounder), Mason Crane (£40k, bowler), Blake Cullen (T20 Blast wildcard, bowler), Joe Denly (£48k, batter), Jade Dernbach (£24k, bowler), Josh Inglis (£100k, Australia, wicketkeeper), Dan Lawrence (48k, all-rounder), Mohammad Nabi (£80k, all-rounder), Luis Reece (£24k, all-rounder), Adam Rossington (£32k, wicketkeeper), Roelof van der Merwe (£32k, all-rounder), Chris Wood (£40k, bowler), Mark Wood (£60k, bowler).

Much will depend on English-born Australian batter Josh Inglis at the top of the order. Eoin Morgan needs to rediscover his scoring touch, but bowlers Mohammad Nabi and Mark Wood are proven performers in short-form cricket. That said, the squad appears a little thin in places and Shane Warne will need all of his motivational powers to get them to the playoffs.

Manchester Originals

Home ground: Old Trafford

County: Lancashire

Men’s coach: Simon Katich

Men’s squad: Jos Buttler (England central contract, wicketkeeper), Colin Ackermann (£32k, all-rounder), Carlos Brathwaite (£48k, West Indies, all-rounder), Joe Clarke (£60k, wicketkeeper), Lockie Ferguson (£100k, New Zealand, bowler), Steven Finn (£32k, bowler), Richard Gleeson (£24k, bowler), Sam Hain (£40k, batter), Tom Hartley (£24k, bowler), Fred Klaasen (T20 Blast wildcard, bowler), Tom Lammonby (£40k, batter), Colin Munro (£100k, New Zealand, batter), Jamie Overton (£48k, all-rounder), Matt Parkinson (£60k, bowler), Ollie Robinson (£80k, bowler), Phil Salt (£80k, batter).

Gamechangers aplenty at Old Trafford with destructive batters in Jos Buttler, Colin Munro and Phil Salt. Lockie Ferguson spearheads a strong bowling attack with Carlos Brathwaite and Tom Hartley also excelling of late in the T20 Blast. The Originals should be there or thereabouts at the business end of the competition.

Northern Superchargers

Home ground: Headingley

Counties: Yorkshire, Durham

Men’s coach: Darren Lehmann

Men’s squad: Faf du Plessis (£100k, South Africa, captain, batter), Ben Stokes (England central contract, all-rounder), Harry Brook (£32k, batter), Brydon Carse (£32k, bowler), Matthew Fisher (£40k, bowler), Tom Kohler-Cadmore (£40k, batter), Chris Lynn (£80k, Australia, batter), Adam Lyth (£60k, batter), Callum Parkinson (£24k, bowler), Matthew Potts (£48k, bowler), Ben Raine (T20 Blast wildcard, all-rounder), Adil Rashid (£80k, bowler), John Simpson (£24k, wicketkeeper), Jordan Thompson (£48k, all-rounder), Mujeeb ur Rahman (£100k, Afghanistan, bowler), David Willey (£60k, all-rounder).

Ben Stokes’ likely absence would be a big blow for a squad somewhat lacking in experience and star quality after captain Aaron Finch was ruled out. The bowling looks strong but, while Harry Brook has excelled in the T20 Blast, Faf du Plessis and Chris Lynn are going to have to score heavily to keep the Northern Superchargers in the hunt.

Oval Invincibles

Home ground: The Oval

Counties: Surrey, Kent

Men’s coach: Tom Moody

Men’s squad: Rory Burns (England central contract, batter), Sam Curran (England central contract, all-rounder), Sam Billings (£80k, wicketkeeper), Alex Blake (£24k, batter), Jordan Clark (£32k, all-rounder), Jordan Cox (T20 Blast wildcard, wicketkeeper), Tom Curran (£80k, all-rounder), Laurie Evans (£40k, batter), Brandon Glover (£32k, bowler), Colin Ingram (£48k, batter), Will Jacks (£40k, batter), Sandeep Lamichhane (£60k, Nepal, bowler), Saqib Mahmood (£60k, bowler), Sunil Narine (£100k, West Indies, all-rounder), Jason Roy (£100k, batter), Nathan Sowter (£24k, bowler), Reece Topley (£48k, bowler).

England duo Jason Roy and Sam Curran head what looks a really strong squad at the Oval. Will Jacks has been in great form in the T20 Blast for Surrey while England quick Saqib Mahmood’s stock continues to rise. Throw in one of the greats of T20 in Sunil Narine and the mystery spin of Sandeep Lamichhine, and you have a team capable of going all the way.

Southern Brave

Home ground: The Rose Bowl

Counties: Hampshire, Sussex

Men’s coach: Mahela Jayawardene

Men’s squad: Jofra Archer (England central contract, bowler), Danny Briggs (£48k, bowler), Devon Conway (£80k, New Zealand, batter), Alex Davies (£40k, all-rounder), Liam Dawson (£60k, bowler), Colin de Grandhomme (£100k, New Zealand, all-rounder), Quinton de Kock (£100k, South Africa, wicketkeeper), George Garton (£32k, bowler), Chris Jordan (£60k, bowler), Jake Lintott (T20 Blast wildcard, bowler), Tymal Mills (£48k, bowler), Craig Overton (£24k, bowler), Delray Rawlins (£40k, all-rounder), James Vince (£80k, batter), Max Waller (£24k, bowler), Ross Whiteley (£32k, batter).

Andre Russell’s absence is a big blow but Colin de Grandhomme is a solid replacement in a squad filled with depth and talent. Jofra Archer’s recovery from a nagging elbow injury could be vital to their hopes, but James Vince is in great nick and he should help Quinton de Kock and Devon Conway score big runs at the top of the order. Chris Jordan is one of the best death bowlers around and the Southern Brave should be vying for honours in mid-August. The best bookmakers clearly think so.

Trent Rockets

Counties: Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire

Men’s coach: Andy Flower

Men’s squad: Lewis Gregory (£80k, captain, all-rounder), Joe Root (England central contract, batter), Matthew Carter (£40k, bowler), Sam Cook (T20 Blast wildcard, bowler), Ben Cox (£24k, wicketkeeper), Marchant de Lange (£60k, bowler), Alex Hales (£80k, batter), Rashid Khan (£100k, Afghanistan, bowler), Dawid Malan (£60k, batter), Tom Moores (£40k, all-rounder), Steven Mullaney (£48k, all-rounder), Samit Patel (£24k, all-rounder), Wahab Riaz (£60k, Pakistan, bowler), D’Arcy Short (£100k, Australia, batter), Timm van der Gugten (£48k, bowler), Luke Wood (£32k, bowler), Luke Wright (£32k, all-rounder).

Alex Hales, Rashid Khan and Dawid Malan are the stand-out names in the Trent squad with D’Arcy Short needing to find his touch to justify his price tag after some indifferent form in the T20 Blast. Veterans Samit Patel and Luke Wright are still capable of turning matches, but the bowling might be a little thin especially if Wahab Riaz fails to obtain a work permit.

Welsh Fire

Men’s coach: Gary Kirsten

Men’s squad: Ollie Pope (England central contract, batter), Qais Ahmed (£48k, Afghanistan, bowler), Jonny Bairstow (£100k, wicketkeeper), Jake Ball (£60k, bowler), Tom Banton (£80k, batter), Josh Cobb (£40k, all-rounder), Ian Cockbain (£48k, batter), Matthew Critchley (£24k, all-rounder), Leus du Plooy (T20 Blast wildcard, batter), Ben Duckett (£60k, batter), Ryan Higgins (£32k, all-rounder), David Lloyd (£24k, all-rounder), Jimmy Neesham (£80k, New Zealand, all-rounder), David Payne (£32k, bowler), Glenn Phillips (£100k, New Zealand, all-rounder), Liam Plunkett (£40k, bowler), Kieron Pollard (£100k, West Indies, all-rounder).

While Kieron Pollard is listed in the Welsh Fire squad, the West Indian star looks set to miss the tournament due to Covid restrictions. That would be a major blow although Jonny Bairstow, Tom Banton, Glenn Phillips and T20 Blast revelation Leus du Plooy are all potential matchwinners with the bat. The bowling doesn’t look as strong and this could be the Fire’s stumbling block.

Verdict

With just eight group matches apiece, teams are going to have to hit the ground running if they are to make the top three. Two of my shortlisted teams, Oval Invincibles and Manchester Originals, meet in the opener so I hope that will prove instructive.

The other contenders in my eyes are bookies’ favourites Southern Brave. But the team I’m going for is Oval Invincibles. With proven matchwinners throughout the order and a strong English spine, I think they are in with a great chance of taking the trophy on 21 August at 6/1 with Unibet

The Hundred Format Explained

Each innings consists of 100 balls with a bowler delivering either five or 10 consecutive balls. There is a change of ends every 10 balls and each bowler has a maximum of 20 balls apiece.

The bowling side can take a time out of up to two and a half minutes and there is a 25-ball powerplay at the start of each innings with two fielders permitted outside the 30-yard circle.

Group Stages Explained

Each team plays eight matches in the group stages, four at home and four away from home. They include two meetings with their local rivals - London Spirit and Oval Invincibles, Welsh Fire and Southern Brave, Manchester Originals and Northern Superchargers, and Birmingham Phoenix and Trent Rockets.

The team finishing top of the group stages will go straight to the final with the second and third-placed teams meeting in an eliminator to decide the second finalist.
